How to build an Etsy listing that search and buyers understand

Etsy is a search engine for handmade, vintage and craft — shoppers type a phrase, and Etsy looks for it in your title, tags, category and attributes. You get 140 characters of title and 13 tags to say what the item is. Filling every field is the whole game; a complete listing outranks a sparse one at the same price.

Create the listing

  1. Open the form. Shop Manager → Listings → Add a listing. If you have not opened a shop yet, Etsy walks you through shop name, currency and payment details first; publishing your first listing costs the listing fee.
  2. Photos first. Upload up to 10 photos plus a short video. The first photo is the search thumbnail — shoot it square-ish with the item filling the frame.
  3. Title (140 characters). Write a readable phrase that contains the words people search: what it is, what it is made of, who it is for, and the occasion. Save the last third of the title for one or two extra search phrases.
  4. Category and type. Pick the deepest category Etsy offers and the item type it asks for — both feed the filters shoppers click.
  5. Attributes. Fill who it is for, occasion, holiday, material, colour and any category-specific attributes. Etsy uses attributes for filtering and for matching queries you did not think of.
  6. Tags: all 13, each up to 20 characters. Use whole phrases, not single words. Thirteen phrases describe thirteen different ways a buyer might search; thirteen copies of one word describe one.
  7. Materials, personalisation and price. List materials plainly (they double as search terms). Turn on the personalisation field if the item can be customised — buyers cannot order a custom item without it.
  8. Shipping and processing. Set processing time (required), the carrier and service, and your origin postcode. Then publish — the listing fee is charged when it goes live.

Title limit, tags and how Etsy search reads them

FieldLimitWhat Etsy does with it
Title140 charactersPrimary match. Keep it a sentence a human would read; keyword soup reads as spam.
Tags13 tags × 20 charactersMatch the query words you could not fit in the title. Phrases beat single words.
Category + attributesPer categoryFilters and category browse. A missing attribute removes you from that filter.
MaterialsFree textSearchable words — "merino wool" finds buyers who typed merino wool.
Listing quality—Complete fields, all photos used, a video, reviews and a finished About section lift where the listing sits.

Tag rule of thumb: repeat no phrase twice, cover the synonyms (beanie / toque / winter hat), and add the gift angle ("gift for mum") where it is true. Never copy your title into every tag — you only get one shot at each search.

What Etsy charges

Fee conceptHow it works
Listing fee$0.20 each time a listing goes live. A listing runs until it sells or for four months; auto-renew or a restock charges another $0.20.
Transaction fee6.5% of each sale made through Etsy.
Payment processingAbout 3% + $0.25 in the US; the rate depends on your country and payment method.
Offsite adsA fee only when the order came from an Etsy offsite ad. The percentage is set in Marketing → Offsite Ads, and shops below Etsy's revenue threshold can opt out.
Shipping labelCharged to your payment account when you buy it, at Etsy's discounted carrier rate.
Shop subscriptionNone for a standard shop; Etsy Plus is an optional upgrade.

Fees stack, so price from take-home, not from the item's cost: fee take-home calculator.

Shipping on Etsy

  1. Set a processing time you can actually meet — it is shown to the buyer and it sets the ship-by date Etsy expects.
  2. Offer the carriers you will really use, and pick a default service. Etsy shows estimated delivery to the buyer from these settings.
  3. Buy the label in Etsy for the discounted rate and automatic tracking upload, or buy elsewhere and add the tracking number.
  4. Free shipping is a conversion tool: build the postage into the price when the item is small and light, and say "free shipping" in the listing.
  5. Parcel over a certain size or weight? Check the carrier's oversized bands before you promise a price — that is where margins disappear.

Common Etsy mistakes

One-tap copy: paste into Etsy

Edit in place, tap Copy, paste into the matching Etsy field. The counters check the 140-character title and the 20-character-per-tag limit. Worked example for a made-to-order knitted beanie — swap in your item.
