How to list on Depop so the right buyers actually see it

Depop is street style, Y2K and vintage with buyers who scroll for a mood before they scroll for a brand. The listing form is short, there is no separate title field, and the first four or five words you type do the work a title does everywhere else. Get those right, fill the structured fields, and the fee is one of the cheapest in resale.

Create the listing

  1. Open the form. In the Depop app tap the Sell button; on the web go to depop.com and open the sell form. Photos come first, so arrive with the set already shot.
  2. Photos. Cover shot with the item filling the frame on a plain background, then back, label, detail and every flaw. Depop's grid crops hard, so nothing important belongs at the edge.
  3. Description — the first line is your title. Depop has no separate title field. Put brand, item, colour and size in the first four or five words: Levi's 501 Black Jeans W32 L30 beats cute vintage jeans!! every time.
  4. Rest of the description. Line by line: measurements (pit-to-pit, waist flat, length, inseam), then condition with named flaws, then fit, then smoke-free / pet-free / why you are selling. Keep each fact on its own line so it reads on a phone.
  5. Hashtags. Depop's listing text supports hashtags and buyers do search them. Use a handful of real ones — #levis501, #y2kdenim, #vintagestreetwear — not a wall of unrelated tags.
  6. Category, brand, size, colour, condition. These are structured fields, not decoration. Depop's search matches them: a listing with the brand typed only in the text does not appear when a buyer filters on brand.
  7. Price. Check what the same piece has been selling for, then list above the number you would accept — buyers on Depop send offers, and you want room to counter.
  8. Shipping, then publish. Choose whether the buyer or you pay the Depop Shipping label, or arrange your own tracked shipping. Pick your size band for the packed parcel and publish.

Title, and how Depop search reads a listing

Part of the listingWhat Depop does with it
First 4–5 words of the descriptionShown as the listing name in search results and on the grid. Front-load brand, item, colour and size — this is the closest thing Depop has to a title.
Category / brand / colour / sizeStructured filters. If a buyer filters on the brand and you only typed it in the text, you are invisible to them.
Rest of the descriptionSecondary match, and it carries the measurements and the flaw notes that stop returns.
HashtagsMatched like any other keyword. Relevant ones help; stuffed ones are ignored and read as spam.
Price and activityBuyers sort and filter by price. Likes and offers move an item back up people's feeds, so answer offers fast.

Depop does not publish a hard character count for the listing text, so the discipline is the opposite of eBay's: do not waste the opening words. Say what the item is before you say anything about it.

What Depop charges

Fee conceptRateHow it works
Selling commission0% (US)Depop removed its 10% seller commission for the US, UK and Australia in 2024. Older articles that still quote 10% are describing the old rate, or a seller outside those regions.
Payment processing3.3% + $0.45 per saleCharged through Depop Payments on the total the buyer pays — item, shipping and tax — not on the item price alone.
ListingFreeNo listing fee and no monthly fee for a standard account.
Boosted listingsOptional, extraAn optional promoted placement charged only if it leads to a sale. Switch it off until the base listing is converting.
ShippingBuyer pays by defaultYou choose at listing time whether the buyer pays the label, you pay it, or you arrange your own.

Because processing applies to item + shipping + tax, free shipping costs you more than it looks: on a $30 item with a $6 label you absorb 3.3% + $0.45 on $36, not on $30. Run any price change through the fee calculator in the app — this page's model is the approximate one this repo publishes at /api/marketplaces, not a live quote from Depop.

Photos on Depop

  • Cover: item alone, centred, filling the frame, plain background, daylight. Depop buyers judge style in the thumbnail.
  • Then: back, label/brand tag, texture or hardware close-up, and one photo per flaw.
  • Measurements as a photo (tape across the flat garment) answers the fit question before it is asked.
  • Styled shots help on Depop more than anywhere else — but only in addition to the clean product shots, never instead of them.
  • No stock images on used items, no watermarks, no text or collage overlays. Depop moderates reused brand imagery.

Shipping on Depop

  1. Pick the shipping mode at listing time: Depop Shipping (a prepaid tracked label — you choose whether the buyer pays it or you do) or arrange your own.
  2. If you use Depop Shipping, use Depop's label. Shipping a Depop-Shipping order with your own label takes you outside Depop Protection and can get the order cancelled.
  3. If you arrange your own, ship tracked and add the tracking to the order, then mark it shipped — an untracked parcel is an unprotected one.
  4. Weigh the packed parcel, not the garment, and pick the size band with room to spare. Under-declared weight comes back as postage due on you.
  5. Ship promptly. Most sellers ship within a couple of days, and speed is part of what buyers rate you on.
  6. Pack for the item: poly mailer for soft goods, box for shoes and bags. Cover every old barcode before you attach the label.

Common Depop mistakes

  • Wasting the first four or five words on "cute vintage top!!" — those words are your title in search.
  • Typing the brand only in the text and leaving the brand field empty, so brand filters never show you.
  • Listing at 10% fee thinking it still applies to US sellers — and pricing yourself out of the market against people who know it is processing only.
  • A hashtag wall of unrelated tags. A few accurate ones beat thirty random ones.
  • Ignoring offers. A counter offer usually sells an item that would have sat for a month.
  • Shipping a Depop-Shipping order with your own label and losing seller protection.
  • Style shots only — no label, no measurements, no flaw photo — so buyers ask instead of buy.
  • Bulk-dumping twenty items in one day and nothing for two weeks. Steady listing beats bursts.

One-tap copy: paste into Depop

Edit in place, tap Copy, paste into Depop's sell form. The first box is the line Depop will show as your title, so keep brand, item, colour and size inside it. Worked example for a pair of vintage trainers — swap in your own brand, size, measurements and flaws.
